Suddenly Savior

April 2, 2026 by Monica 2 Comments

One beautiful, perfectly sunny day at the New Jersey seaside, my siblings and I were playing around in the walloping waves as we had done many times in the days and weeks before.

Knowing what strong swimmers we were, champions of the Great Valley summer team relay squad – ages 11, 13, and 16 to be oddly specific – we always stretched the limits of what was water “safe.” If ever a current decided to sweep us off our steady feet, or a sneaky slap from the colossal surf happened to catch us by surprise, we always managed to get back up and start the fun all over again- a little wiser and wet for the wear. We researched like all the teen swimmers our age, by watching hours and hours of Baywatch and the summer Olympics. We felt nothing could stop us.

However, one time, none of that mattered. No matter how we prepared or how strong our wills were– we were reminded of how powerful the elements can be and were swallowed by something much bigger than we ever imagined.

In a matter of moments, our frolicking quickly turned to panic, as we were suspended within the incessant pulls of an invisible rip current.  My older sister, younger brother and I were plucked from each other’s grips and sent sailing away from the safety of the shoreline at warp speed. No amount of wrestling the waves could free us, in fact as all the research truly tells you- it only made things worse.

My sister made a quick decision, with a sorrowful look thrown in my direction, to fight with all her strength toward our little brother, who was quickly drifting further from us.  And as I watched her swim away, she screamed she would come back for me.

And this my friends, is the last thing I actually remember.

But that was not the end of the story.

Help came.

Not from my sister, parent, or even a lifeguard.

Rather, from a complete stranger.

A man who was nowhere around us earlier in the fun or in the frightening moments, but who had suddenly appeared.

Grabbing my hand, he challenged the sea and it’s swells, then swooped me up in the safety of his arms, and carried me to the shore.

My family raced to rejoin me, embracing me, and searching the whole horizon for the stranger to thank him.

But he was nowhere to be found.

My sister can recall every moment of the day. She tells me this story all the time. But, the part she says will stay ingrained in her mind is what the stranger looked like.

She says he was older, but so incredibly strong, with a presence and power moving through the water like no one she had ever seen before.

And his hair was silver and white, almost to the point of glowing.

She remembers so well how he cradled me closely as he carried me safely to the sand.

She tells me time and time again that the stranger was no stranger at all. He was an angel.

Truth is…we all need rescuing.

Sometimes it’s from the wickedness of the world. Sometimes it’s from the voices swimming inside our heads. Sometimes it’s from a silent swell that tries to pull us far away from what is safe and sound.

But there will always be things that try to take us under, no matter who we are and how strong we think we can be.

What will we do?

Will we fight the storm with our own might, conjuring up the courage to stand firm against the constant knocking of waves?

Will we cower to the chaos, eventually giving in to the temptations and tricks spinning around us?

Or will we reach for the hand that saves?

The best news for us: there’s not usually just one huge, hurry-up scenario like my seaside scare in which we need rescuing. We need it all the time, which gives us millions of moments to surrender and admit that we need heavenly help from a hero. And it’s never too late.

This weekend, walk with the One who loves you so much, that He gave up everything so you could have everything.

Repeat the words, “Jesus loves me, this I know…” as if you are a small child, with each breath bringing more belief than the first.

And if you still don’t know it or believe it deep in your heart- pick up that storybook filled with saving grace, mountains climbed through mercy, epic failures and freedom found, all from a steadfast love that knew no limits.

You are worth saving.

In all our weaknesses, in all our wrongs, when we’ve sailed away in search of something better, or been knocked down and swept out lost in the sea, no hope in sight.

Reach for the hands that are strong enough to bring you back and carry you through it all.

Jesus loves you.

Say it, sing it, shout it, or whisper it. But believe it.

Now friends, close your eyes and remember what He did for you and the very holes that proved it so.

Spoiler alert- Jesus wins

April 14, 2025 by Monica 4 Comments

I love to start off my posts sometimes with a bunch of truths. Truths about life, motherhood, mistakes, messes, and all things real.

In my experience- people like to relate and connect to what they’re reading- like a virtual high-five. So, get that hand ready. Here we go. In no particular order….

I forgot to pick up my kids a couple weeks ago.

I overloaded the washing machine ( for the 100th time) and almost broke it and made my husband very mad.

I let the Amazon guy push a huge 200 lb box across our newly refinished floors, thus scratching them.

I didn’t put on gloves while dying Easter eggs this morning and now my fingers are marbled.

And I’m pretty sure my kids don’t like me.

Now, this is the deafening silence where I pray someone reading this has felt any of these things. If not, I’m just going to keep on clicking the keys. I have both littles taking naps. *Although I did send the toddler to bed with her newly dyed Easter egg, and that was probably a terrible idea because she’ll probably drop the egg from her top bunk and her room will smell like a huge poo and she will be down any second. So I’ll be quick.

While driving the kids around this past week, ( I do my best thinking while driving) I kept having the imagery of light pouring in from darkness. And letters were dancing around in my head, rearranging and coming to life.

This was all paired with scenes flashing from the guilt and shame of my recent parenting where all I do is try to correct, raise them well, and bring them closer but what it feels like is nothing short of yelling, arguing, and walls being put up. I have pretty much felt like a huge failure in this department for a long, cold, barren season now.

Much like winter.

Dreary, frigid, desolate, silent, and what seems like a huge halt in growth.

But that’s not the truth, is it?

In the darkness of winter, there is so much we cannot see. We’ve actually decided there is nothing even there.

Much like inside hearts.

I finally made sense of the letters roaming around in my head. It is a prayer for my children (and myself.)

S. I. C. K.

Selfish, Inconsiderate, Compassionate, Kind.

A total Transformation.

You see, we’re all stuck somewhere, in need of healing, new life breathed into us. Some time we are aware of what we need, other times- it’s everyone else who knows it first.

Only Jesus can do this. Not me.

I cannot burn myself out trying to change hearts.

Only Jesus can do this. Not me.

I cannot perform miracles and expect laundry and dishes to be done with a smile.

Only Jesus can do this. Not me.

My job is to lift them up to the ONE who made them and loves them infinitely more than I could ever try to. And LET Him work within them, while I let Him work with my messes and mistakes.

Nothing wasted.

In the darkness, there is much going on. ( Look around!)

No better time to reflect on this amazing miracle than during Holy Week.

7 days.

Joy. Betrayal. Solitude. Pain. Darkness. Quiet. Triumph.

God transformed all the dark into light.

Brighter than we could ever imagine.

The world was blanketed in messes and mistakes. And you might feel that’s all you’re wearing these day- a snuggy wrapping up all your flaws and failures.

But walk with Him, talk with Him. Give up all your hurt, pain, sorrow and see what He can do.

Don’t stay stuck in the news of Friday…the place where hope seems lost.

Rather, have faith in the silence of Saturday, the promises, and all that cannot be seen- yet.

Believe that Sunday is coming. And when it does, bask in the beautiful light and new LIFE.

Because of the truth:

He wins. <3

Walking With a Cross

April 7, 2023 by Monica 5 Comments

As I watched The Passion of the Christ the other night, a certain character made his way into my heart for the first time. While I was deeply pained and tears burst forth, I could not take my eyes off Simon of Cyrene. This little-known player in the Passion had me transfixed on the road to Calvary.

The Romans essentially plucked him from the chaotic crowd and demanded he help the suffering Savior.

What was going on in his head and heart as this outrageous offer was made on his behalf? The movie does an amazing job depicting his initial reaction of disgust and unwillingness. He tries to resist and runs away when they first call to him…

Once the militant men on horses have seized him, they force the heavy cross onto his body and he is literally and figuratively face to face with Jesus. His reaction now has begun to change. There is a moment where there is an exchange within their eyes- and for the first time, you see a softer side of Simon. There is confusion and a spark of sorrow as he looks closely upon the blood-stains and brokenness. It must have felt as though the cross was entirely too heavy for one man, almost two. Yet, Jesus walks on- tired, weary, and purposeful.

The two continue on the long road, with its twists and turns, lined with onlookers- some weeping and some spitting. But all eyes are on the cross.

Its weight, crushing the bodies beneath it, digging deep into the wounds of Jesus and into the shoulders of Simon.

They are walking together, arm in arm, sharing the unbearable burden.

If we look closer, we could possibly see how alike we are to this unlikely character…

We, like Simon, are often plucked from the masses to carry a burden we never asked for, never wanted, never thought was meant for us. It seems to us- unbearable, without an end in sight, and void of purpose.

But, if we choose to walk this journey with our Savior, arm in arm, allowing his gaze upon the final purpose to be ours… I believe we might be able to be changed as a result. We are not alone on this journey to suffering. He is always with us, sharing in our trials- strengthening us when we are weak, too frightened and unsure as what lies ahead. His promise of rebuilding and resurrection comes to life in all of us if we will only have faith.

What ever happened to Simon of Cyrene as he left the traumatic scene that day, having walked side by side with our Hope-full Hero to the place of his sacrifice?

There are almost no accounts, which to me, as a story-writing enthusiast, is inexplicably intriguing. Is it because it allows us to place ourselves directly in his shoes? I believe it is up to us to decide what happened next. Because it is the same question being asked of us all…

What will happen next? To you, to me? What will our direction be? I believe with every fiber of my being that Simon of Cyrene was a different man when he walked away. So, will we be changed from this journey we are on? I pray the answer on this day as we remember all that was done for us, is a resounding, rejoicing, reuniting “yes.”

Imagine the joy awaiting us this Easter at the empty tomb…

A Life Full of More

Have you ever been a part of a surprise?

Happy Birthday Deal With It GIF by CBS All Access - Find & Share ...

A party, get together, or even a gift? It’s such an interesting part to play- whether you are the decoy, the distraction, the planner, or the recipient. There’s always more than meets the eye, and the hope is that all goes off without a hitch. But sometimes that’s not quite the case…

My poor husband. While we were dating, we had a standing Wednesday night date. Come Heck or high water, we made this date happen. It was a mid-week, dedicated expression of young love and how committed we were to overcoming the distance. ( about an hour between our locations in VA & MD)

One Wednesday afternoon, on my ride home from teaching, I received a phone call from my significant other, breaking our date.

Enter Monica pout.

No, a little Monica anger.

Nope, I am now recalling I was flat out furious.

My Day As a Working Mom in GIFs | HuffPost Life

Where was his commitment and dedication? Didn’t he understand the incredible weight riding on that weekly date? It basically held us together. Like glue. Gorilla glue. A bandaid, even.

He was ripping off the metaphorical bandaid.

And it hurt.

And boy, did I chew him out for breaking that date. For over an hour.

He was very quiet on the phone and just kind of took the punches. I think that was making it worse. Although a time or two, I remember him asking me gently to please trust him.

Well, folks, approximately one month later- clarity, dedication, and commitment came.

In the form of a beautiful diamond ring.

That sweet boy had canceled our date to drive up to Philadelphia and have dinner with my parents. And ultimately, ask for my hand in marriage.

I apologize weekly for the hard time I gave him. But before you go feeling too bad for hubby… it’s really only fair that I mention this is the same “funny guy” who two years prior -asked for my ring size, blindfolded me for the car ride, and pulled up to a bowling alley only to gift me with a personalized bowling ball.

Surprise!

Just. Sayin’.

Now, on to present day.

Easter Monday.

Last week was Spring Break- and even though we were restricted to staying home, I took the girls on a bit of a journey anyway.

We walked next to Jesus, celebrating and waving Palms.

We turned tables with him, angry, in the Temple.

We watched as Judas betrayed-chosing money over loyalty.

We were humbled as He washed the dirt and day off our feet.

We broke bread and drank wine with Him.

He told us He would be leaving soon, that it was part of a plan.

We prayed with Him in the Garden.

We fell asleep and woke to soldiers taking Him away.

And He said nothing to escape it.

He only told us to TRUST Him.

He was mocked, scourged, beaten and accused.

He stayed silent.

Then He was nailed.

And He breathed His last breath.

Why?

For them. For us.

The girls and I sank deep into the honest thoughts and actions of those disciples. His closest friends.

How forlorn they must have been. How confused and utterly hopeless they must have felt.

They didn’t know there was more.

But we do.

We have Hope.

We know that the “Good” in Good Friday was there indeed, amidst the pain and suffering.

But His closest friends only saw death.

What happened three days later brought more life and light into this world than death and darkness could EVER try to hide.

And that same HOPE is still with us today.

Each and every moment. Especially now.

Speaking from someone who dreads taking down the decorations and drowning in the post-holiday blahs… I truly believe this year is different.

The message of Easter did not get lost among my perfectly positioned pastels and pastries.

Those things weren’t around this time.

What was: a clear, dedicated, committed act of love.

And I felt it deeper in my heart than in any past Easter. ( and I’m a PK- so I’ve had my fair share of triumphant trumpets, layers of Lavenders and Lilles as well as epic egg hunts.

Maybe it was because my heart was desperate for a sign: a positive promise to overthrow the negative news.

Or maybe I have finally learned that brick and mortar buildings, dozens of decorations, and matching outfits do not an Easter make. It isn’t something that can be taken down and put back up every year.

It’s more.

It’s a promise kept. A sustaining feeling that can brighten the darkest of days, the most somber of circumstances.

If we let it.

Today can be the FIRST day of a season, a year, a life … full of Hope.

So, after you toss out the colored eggs, package up the bunnies, baskets and banners- resist the temptation to be sad. You won’t need them where you’re headed.

*My adaptation of a selection from The Grinch Who Stole Christmas*

“They’re just waking up! I know just what they’ll do!
Their mouths will hang open a minute or two
Then the FRIENDS AND THIER FAMILIES will all cry boo-hoo!

That’s a noise,” grinned THE DARK, “that I simply must hear!”
He paused, and THE DARK put a hand to his ear.

And he did hear a sound rising INSIDE THE HOME
It started in low, then started to ROAM.

But this sound wasn’t sad!
Why, this sound sounded glad!

Every FRIEND AND THIER FAMILY, the tall and the small,
Was singing without any presents at all!

He hadn’t stopped EASTER from coming! It came!
Somehow or other, it came just the same!

And THE DARK, with his DARKNESS- JUST WATCHING THE GLOW,
Stood puzzling and puzzling. “How could it be so?

It came without ribbons! It came without tags!
It came without packages, boxes, or bags!”

He puzzled and puzzled till his puzzler was sore.
Then THE DARK thought of something he hadn’t before.

Maybe EASTER he thought, doesn’t come from a store.
Maybe EASTER, perhaps, means a little bit more!”

I’m no Dr. Seuss, but I gave it a whirl…

What does our future hold?

What will this all bring?

I cannot say exactly.

But I am certain of one thing:

Hope already won.

So push Dark out the door.

Cling to His Love,

And a Life full of More.

I am praying for you, dear friends.
